I don't know if this really is a curse, but this trait seems to run in the Leavitt family. You see, when I married into the Leavitt family I realized that every one of them would give me the shirt off their back if I needed it, AND they would give a total stranger the same shirt if they needed it too.
For example, last night the Kirby man was out in the neighborhood cleaning carpets one room for free! Well, I didn't know it was the Kirby Man so I was going to let them clean the hallway because Will had cut his foot earlier in the day and blood was all over the carpet. I was thinking, yes somebody who wants referrals and will do the best job ever at getting those stains out! So the guy shows up and of course he says you know I could just clean this area here in about 10 more minutes and it would look a lot nicer. I knew better but my loving husband showed up and put the man to work. He said sure clean the living room while you are at it clean this bedroom too! And then he added, are you hungry because we have plenty of food left over from dinner? So the Kirby guy was finishing up and he and Danny got talking shop. The Kirby man not only cleaned carpets but he was in a band and played the guitar! Can you believe it? So they had to talk some more about guitars and where to get music and then he noticed we had the book by Glenn Beck, "The Christmas Sweater" and asked if it was good. The Kirby man was a huge fan of Glenn Beck and so is Danny!!!! I was just shaking my head at this point. Meanwhile, the Kirby man was cleaning up his $2300 vacuum and Danny went down stairs to find his other copy of the Glenn Beck book to give the Kirby Man, why did we need two? To say the least, the Kirby Man had a great evening at the Leavitt's. He went home with our money (which Danny tipped him well because he probably didn't have very much money), our food, and our extra copy of, "The Christmas Sweater". Oh, but we did end up with his phone number so we could get together and JAM! Fortunately, Danny had to leave before the Schwann man showed up!!!
You see this isn't just Danny who does this in his family they all have a soft spot for salesmen, or people who seem to have less. Danny's sister has the Fuller Brush Man, his mom the Schwann man. His brother Dean has Miles (a boy from Dean's previous ward), Brent used to be the best friend of a mentally handicapped boy in college. Ryan has the neighbor kids and Grandma Elouise and Aunt Kris have their neighbors. And that is just the ones I know of. I am sure there are more and his other brothers and sister have their people too. Sometimes I wonder if these people are drawn to the Leavitt's or if the Leavitt's are drawn to them.
I really don't see this as a curse. I make light of it but I honestly admire them for being so giving. Each one of them has done something for me or my family and I can always count on their support and love. They have BIG, BIG hearts of gold and I am lucky to be married into such a great family who love other people and love to be with each other.
